Chapter 21

“I don’t understand how you’re here,” Devon said once he’d recovered enough composure to speak. “Maeve told me the story. I saw your body in Ogginosh, and you no longer had your needle. How is this possible?”

“There is so much that is possible in the realm of death and universal consciousness,” Headmistress Christi said. “You would not truly understand until you’ve experienced it. Even being crystallized doesn’t paint the true picture, though it’s the closest most of us will get to gaining that kind of wisdom and perspective without our soul fully venturing into the beyond. What I can tell you is the same thing I told Miss Rhodes. I had help to get back to my body and reclaim my needle. Luckily, my body was well preserved during my time of suspended animation. And here I am.”

“I don’t know what to say,” Devon said, still wiping tears from his eyes. “I’m just so thankful to have you back.”

“I’m thankful to be back—and look at you.” The headmistress tugged at the collar of Devon’s shirt. “You’re a tailor now, like you were born to be. Maeve told me what happened. I’m sorry about my successor. I worked with him for many years. He was a good man.”

“I was very lucky.” Devon glanced over at me. “We both were. And now we’re doing what we can to stop the vampires. We checked most of the perimeter barrier.”

“I have people doing that as we speak, as well as taking out threats on the outside.”

“The werewolves,” I said.

“Yes. We’ve kept a low enough profile where the vampires have not been alerted to our presence and attacked yet. But they’ll realize they have company soon, so we’ll need to arrange for a negotiation if we cannot get through the barrier.”

“Remember, all seams opened within the barrier lead to the tower,” I said.

“What we really need is the Plague Staff,” the headmistress said. “I checked where it had been hidden and it’s gone.”

“Yeah… I was going to tell you about that.” I was still so frustrated with myself for what had happened. “I so wish you’d told me about it when I saw you with it on the night of Tarquin’s attack. I had no idea it was powered by another needle.”

“Very few people know about the staff or its specific powers. So, you found it?”

“Yes,” I said, a lump forming in my throat. “Dawn was training me to find needles by hiding a Seam Dagger somewhere in the Academy. In one of those sessions, I found the staff instead.”

“But it doesn’t sound like you have it.” The headmistress frowned.

“Unbeknownst to me, Dawn was following me. This was obviously the outcome she was hoping for. She snatched it from me right after I found it. I didn’t have a chance to get away.”

“We need the staff to control them—or to kill them. Either way, we need the staff.”

“What are you saying?” Devon asked, now becoming engrossed in the situation with the Academy and less about his reunion with his mother.
